About this app
This is the official app for uploading pictures to Wikimedia Commons, the free media library that Wikipedia draws its images from. Take a photo, or pick one from your gallery, and a few taps later it can be illustrating an article that thousands of people read.
The best part is the Nearby screen: a map of places around you — buildings, monuments, parks — that have a Wikipedia article but no photograph yet. It turns a walk around your own town into something genuinely useful. You can also browse your past uploads and add categories and descriptions so other people can find them.
You need a free Wikimedia account to upload, and everything you send becomes public under a licence that lets anyone reuse it, so only upload photos you took yourself. The app is built and maintained by Wikimedia volunteers.
